In
the construction phase, hydrocarbon contamination of soil and
groundwater were discovered during a geotechnical investigation for the
South Parking garage at Tampa International Airport (TIA). This 8-level
parking facility is south of the Main Terminal. A Contamination
Assessment Report (CAR) was prepared and submitted to Florida Department
of Environmental Regulation and Hillsborough County Environmental
Protection Commission, describing the horizontal and vertical extent of
the contamination of the soils and groundwater by unleaded hydrocarbons
from petroleum storage and transfer facilities. This CAR further
provided baseline data for the development of the Remedial Action Plan
(RAP). Both the CAR & RAP were prepared by Schreuder.
SI designed and developed a groundwater extraction and treatment system
to deal with the contamination. First, recovery wells were
installed in the contaminated groundwater plumes. An in-place
stormwater sewer was removed and filled in to intercept contaminated
groundwater. The groundwater from this trench would drain and be
captured from one of the recovery wells. The other recovery well
would incorporate the use of an air-sparging treatment system to
optimize for free product recovery. |
