Evaluation of Mined Phosphate Lands for the Creation of 2000-Acre Surface Water
Reservoir

SI provided
professional consulting services to evaluate the feasibility of
utilizing an 2,000 acre former clay settling area as a surface water
reservoir in the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s
(SWFWMD’s) Southern Water Use Caution Area (SWUCA).
This area has experienced a drastic decline in the available
water resources and a recovery strategy has been implemented by the
SWFWMD to reduce the chance of saltwater intrusion in the aquifer and
prevent the reduction of streamflow and lake levels throughout the
SWUCA. The surface water
reservoir will be used to store excess floodwaters that plague the area.
The additional 10 billion gallons of surface water storage will
aid in water resource recovery and provide a water resource for future
growth and development in the region.
