Natural Treatment Capacity of
Wetlands &
Tailing Sand Filtration
on Mined Phosphate Lands
|
SI
conducted a four-year pilot study to assess the feasibility of using a
wetland on mined phosphate lands to naturally purify storm water and reclaimed
water to meet drinking water standards.
The system was installed as part of the pilot project funded by
the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) and the Southwest Florida
Water Management District (SWFWMD).
The basic premise of the pilot project is that natural systems,
in particular natural water treatment in constructed wetlands created on formed clay
settling areas followed by filtration through tailing sand, will remove
organic, inorganic and microbiological contaminants and the treated
water will meet all drinking water standards.
Throughout the pilot project, the system was successful in meeting
all Primary Drinking Water Standards.
Secondary Drinking Water Standards were occasionally exceeded for
seven parameters.
